This is Alex’s completed brief, reproduced as readable web text. Alex and the event are fictional. Copy the structure; replace every fact with your own supported notes and current event information.
Matching blank brief: page 3
Start / travel
Leave 05:50. Corral closes 07:45. If shuttle not departed 06:10, call arranged driver; recheck arrival estimate.
Opening / clock
Use controlled opening cue from 6 Sep. Chip splits; start delay 2 min. Do not push to bank a faster split.
Fuel / access
Gel A in main belt. Tested gel B in labelled side pocket. Required water access from event guide; own intake plan.
Change / recheck
Harder opening effort: ease, check usable supplies, review at official 15 km. Safety concerns act immediately.
Help / cutoffs
Ask marshal for support. Closure 15:00 wall clock. Symptoms or event/medical directions override any routine recheck.
One open item
No rehearsed heat plan. Review latest official advisory and appropriate guidance before committing to start.
Each entry connects a source, an actual resource and a next action. An unanswered question stays visible as a task; completing the page does not establish fitness or safety to race.
A shorter starting route
Begin with six decisions.
Expand only what needs work.
Use what you already know.
Bring your training notes, familiar supplies and the current event guide. Keep unsupported details unresolved.
Draft the one-page brief.
Use the completed example and sentence patterns to name a trigger, first action and recheck. A numerical goal is optional for this organisation task.
Rehearse one change.
Resolve your named open item, test one changed assumption, then transfer concise entries to the matching pocket card.
The additional work you can complete
One free rule.
Or a connected race brief.
The case below gives you a complete response and its reasoning. The full pack connects that method to your other race decisions.
Keep the free decision.
- One fully answered pace-and-fuel case.
- The trigger, first action and recheck.
- A rule pattern you can adapt from supported facts.
No email or purchase required for the web case.

A complete free decision
2:29 ahead.
Would you keep pushing?
This fictional case comes from the seven-page Action Pack sample. Make your choice before opening the explained response.
The clock is ahead. The effort is harder.
Alex’s separately selected goal is 4:30. At the official 10 km marker, chip elapsed time is 1:01:30 against an even-pace reference of 1:03:59. Both use the same clock and distance.
Opening effort is harder than Alex’s recorded controlled cue. The original gel pouch is inaccessible. A rehearsed gel B reserve is in a labelled side pocket, with water available at this fictional station. No concerning symptoms are reported.
- Push to protect the banked time.
- Restore control, verify the reserve and review the assumptions.
- Discard every time goal solely because the clock is ahead.
Reveal the response and the rule
Choose option 2 for these facts.
Ease toward Alex’s recorded opening cue; check the labelled reserve against the existing nutrition plan. The faster clock does not resolve harder effort or missing access. Do not increase effort simply to preserve the lead.
The recheck
At the next official 15 km marker, review effort and usable supplies. If no workable alternative exists or control is not restored, release pressure to preserve the original time goal and seek appropriate event support. Respond earlier to a concern.
Why the other options are incomplete
Option 1 treats the time lead as proof that the plan is working. Option 3 uses the gap alone to abandon the goal. The useful response depends on effort, conditions, resources and safety.
Keep the rule: IF → DO → RECHECK
IF: At official 10 km, the timing basis matches; effort is harder than the recorded cue and the original supply is inaccessible.
DO: Ease effort; check the rehearsed reserve in its named pocket against the independently established nutrition plan. No automatic doubled catch-up serving.
RECHECK: At official 15 km, review effort and usable stock. If the reserve is missing or control is not restored, release time pressure and ask event support about appropriate next steps.
Safety override: Symptoms and event or medical directions require appropriate immediate action; do not wait for a checkpoint. Releasing a time goal is not clearance to continue.
For your own rule, name an observable trigger, a supported first action and a review point. If an input is missing, record its source and your next task instead of inventing an answer.
Who it fits
Your preparation exists.
Your decisions are scattered.
The pack is for self-coached first-road-marathon runners who want to connect existing notes and rehearsed choices into a brief they can carry.
If one free rule covers your task, or your coach already supplies a complete execution plan, the pack may add little.
Know what the pack helps you do.
It organises supported choices. It does not select an individual goal, prescribe nutrition doses, assess medical fitness or guarantee a finish time.
Before you rely on an interactive PDF
Use a PDF reader that supports forms. Save a filled copy and reopen it to confirm your entries remain visible. Viewer behaviour varies; mobile compatibility across devices has not yet been established. You can also print the worksheets.
